Closing our panel sessions of day two of the Summit is a thought-provoking discussion on the challenging task of committing to and integrating entire portfolios with the SDGs.
Andrew Siwo, Director of Sustainable Investments and Climate Solutions NY State Common Retirement Fund stresses the concern that although we are seeing an increase in awareness of SDGs, it is uncertain whether these interlinked global goals will materialise by 2030.
Ambition, scale, and the need for measurable targets are mentioned across the board throughout this panel. Terhi Halme, Senior Responsible Investment and Governance Specialist & PM of the SDI Asset Owner Platform APG, provides insights into how APG are working directly with clients on target setting which is helping guide a clearer path on how to steer capital.
A common call to action that is stressed throughout the two days of the Summit is calling attention to both positive and negative impacts of your investments. Marte Borhaug, Global Head of Sustainable Outcomes Aviva Investors and Jos Gijsbers, Senior Portfolio Manager, ASR Nederland agree that an approach that includes building alliances and joint engagement is needed as well as the development of technological reporting to drive transparency within the investment community.
In summary, with 9 years to go to achieve the 17 goals and 169 sub-targets, further alignment of institutional capital against the SDGs is needed and a few of the key factors that are imperative to driving this increase is standard setting, executing due diligence and analysing the targets that sit beneath each SDGs to facilitate an open dialogue between investors and managers on what and how to achieve their goals.
