Written by Phenix Capital | Mar 30, 2021 8:00:00 AM

keynote speaker:

  • Margaret Kuhlow, Finance Practice Leader, WWF International

Margaret Kuhlow, Finance Practice Leader at WWF International closes the first day of the conference with a powerful keynote speech. She presents data about nature loss, with a 68% decline in monitored populations since 1970, caused by our behaviours and the current investment setup. Currently, we use environmental resources faster than their replenishment rates causing more than 300 billion dollars in financial losses per year. “Nature loss and climate change are the greater systemic risks to our global economy”, she claimed. Climatic disasters, nature loss, and rising pandemics are intertwined and increasing in a rapid rate because of high levels of deforestation and land-use change.

The latter has contributed to 70% of global biodiversity loss and contributes to the spillover of zoonotic diseases, such as covid. The impact investing universe reached 715 billion dollars in 2020 and it is increasing. The majority of impact investors look for investments that prevent GHG emissions and support climate change adaption, but more needs to be done in other areas to stop the staggering consequences of climate change.
