Interview: COVID-19 Pandemic - Catalyst for an Investible and Sustainable Recovery

Speakers:

  • Fiona Reynolds, CEO, Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI)

  • Emelia Holdaway, Policy Programme Director, Institutional Investors Group on Climate Change (IIGCC)

After Fiona Reynold's keynote speech, she was joined by Emelia Holdaway, Policy Programme Director at the Institutional Investors Group on Climate Change (IIGCC). Together, they talked about the pandemic's recovery and that it will require the efficient and equitable deployment of both public and private capital during fiscally challenging times. With trillions of euros in capital under management, institutional investors can allocate their capital towards impact investments, thereby accelerating the recovery.

A group of more than 150 institutional investors, guided by the IIGCC, the PRI, and CDP, has outlined five key factors that should be considered in response to COVID-19. These include:

  1. The prioritization of human relief and job creation without locking in high carbon pathways

  2. The Support of the Green Deal and the upholding of the Paris Agreement

  3. Member States ensuring that COVID-19 support addresses climate risk

  4. The prioritization of climate resiliency and net-zero emissions economic solutions

  5. Embedding investor participation in recovery planning

Throughout the interview, an emphasis was laid on the importance of the next five to ten years in limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees. Achieving this goal requires governments to set out clear directions for the investment community, based on the five key factors.
