Understanding how to close the gap in standard impact measurement and performance is a challenge of this decade and is the topic of discussion throughout this session. The panel deliberate how far along we are on this journey and how organisations can work together to unite towards best practices in measuring impact.

Reflecting on the current state of the environment, Tim Crockford, Senior Fund Manager & Head of Equity Impact Solutions at Regnan (an affiliate of J O Hambro Capital Management) is confident that the industry is moving in the right direction and for investors to fully measure the impact in their investment, a more unified and harmonious voice is needed.

Ross Piper, CEO at Christian Super supports this and highlights that although aggregating data globally is “almost impossible” it is crucial to start with a basic framework that can be built upon by collaborating with key industry players.

Sharing updates from the GIIN is Kelly McCarthy, Director, IRIS+ and Impact Measurement and Management at The Global Impact Investing Network who describes how the GIIN are working with various bodies to address confusion amongst the standards landscape and promote open dialogue at a regulatory level.

Further topics of discussion throughout this session include the danger of hyper-fixation and over-standardisation, whereby the focus is on the final output and number, but not how you got there. Brunno Maradei, Global Head of Responsible Investment at Aegon Asset Management emphasises that measuring impact is in fact a complex concept and there is a need for industry-wide impact indicators to help measure context accurately.

To close, the panel agree that the ideal environment encompasses a balance between standardised measures, transparency of the positive and negative impact of your funds as well as ongoing client engagement and convergence across investment expectations.
