Jennifer Morris, CEO of The Nature Conservancy gives a powerful keynote speech about climate change and its impact on the planet, people, and the financial sector. She highlights how our health, our communities, and the health of our economic system are intrinsically linked to biodiversity. “Biodiversity is the underpinning of human and planetary health”, she claims. To reverse biodiversity loss, asset owners and managers play an outsized role to fund solutions to this crisis. According to Swiss Re latest report, half of Global GDP depends on nature.
Transitioning to a positive economy can create 10.1 trillion dollars in annual business value and millions of jobs by 2030. Focusing investments in 3 SDGs, life on land, life below water, and gender equality can form a foundation that benefits all other SDGs most cost-effectively. Investing in nature is the better deal! 7 billion dollars per year in investments is needed to reverse the rate of biodiversity loss and the intertwined financial losses. Public funding cannot do it alone, the private sector plays a critical role to reverse this trend.
Tackling biodiversity loss is an urgent economic need and natural climate solutions are a pathway to protect biodiversity and deliver the reductions needed to meet the SDGs in time. Jennifer concludes her powerful message by calling managers and asset owners to turn biodiversity mainstream in their portfolios, eliminating investments that harm it, setting targets for biodiversity as for climate, and integrating biodiversity risks on impact reporting using the measurement tools available.
