Pension funds and insurance companies seek to align their portfolios with the values of their beneficiaries. This panel discussed how investment opportunities are mapped to reflect such values and how institutional investors can measure their portfolio's non-financial KPIs. A specific focus was laid on the panelists' shared impact themes, questions of measurement standardization, the role of government regulations, and different approaches to impact integration.
Among the panelists, a consensus existed concerning institutional investors' need to integrate the SDGs and an impact mandate into their investment processes. However, the panelists pointed out that the industry is still in its development phase, wherefore flaws and missteps throughout the measurement process must be expected. According to Narina Mnatsakanian, Director of Responsible Investing at Kempen Capital Management, "not everything that is measured matters and not everything that matters can be measured".
Therefore, the focus must always be on the objective and the impact one is aiming to achieve. In his closing statement, Jake Otto, Investment Specialist at Wellington Management, offered a positive outlook by noting that measurement standards will emerge and contribute to transparency within the industry.
