Thematic Deep-Dive: SDG 16 as a Pathway to Justice and Equality

The need for equality continues to be high on the global agenda. Asset owners are at the start of a path where diversity, inclusion, security and equality are considered throughout the investment process. Although the conference is not physically hosted at the Palace and Municipality of Peace and Justice in the Hague, in this session we invited thought leaders to  elaborate on how investments can be made to directly improve security, increase the leadership of women, and build environments that enable people to remain at home and earn a living.

Throughout the session, the panelists debunked the overall perception that SDG 16 offers limited investment opportunities. Dylan Matthews, CEO of Peace Direct, stated that “a peace bond concept is entirely possible, we have to think about de-risking investments in fragile states by taking a venture capital mindset.” Additionally, the panelists pointed towards the early stages of peace-related investments. Further experimentation and development is needed to define products and opportunities. However, there a growing interest of institutional investors exist, as SDG 16 represents an essential precondition for the achievement of the remaining SDGs. The speakers further expect investments within this specific sector to increase, as costumers will demand more action.
