The pandemic has taught us what it could mean to embrace the modeling behind “flattening the curve” and apply it to the climate crisis. The negative side of climate change comes from inaction. When individual action is insufficient to achieve impact, investors should mobilize a critical mass of investors and coordinate a policy signal.

Platforms like the United Nations-convened Net-Zero Asset Owner Alliance are examples of a growing group of institutional investors, delivering the bold commitment to transition investment portfolios to net-zero Greenhouse Gas emissions (GHG) by 2050. Overall, more and more institutional investors have integrated the low-carbon transition into the center of their agenda, setting targets guiding their investment portfolio. How to set which targets and align the portfolio construction, engagement efforts, and reporting?

Throughout the panel, the speakers continuously emphasized the benefits of acting together and maintaining an active dialogue between a diverse range of stakeholders, including governments, corporates, investors, and the scientific community. Investors continue to have great power in driving social and environmental change; however, they need multiple actors to act with them to enhance new structures.

To accelerate the de-carbonization of portfolios, the speakers highlighted the need to set science-based targets and engage in conversations with companies to determine how investors can step in to facilitate the transition. Additionally, the speakers called for improved policy frameworks, a set price on carbon, and enhanced monitoring processes to increase stakeholder incentives to operate more sustainably.
