On this panel, representatives of 3 members of the Net Zero Asset Owners Alliance (Church Commissioners for England, Swiss Re, and Zurich Insurance Group) discuss the challenges and insights regarding the decarbonization path of their investment portfolios.
The discussion kicked off with the mainstream question: What does it mean to decarbonize a portfolio? And how to divest, seeking positive climate solutions, whilst influencing businesses and the real economy to decarbonize? A consensus amongst panellists is that currently, it is impossible to turn a role portfolio net-zero, because more needs to be done on the real economy to ensure the transition. Also, asset owners have to take a step further and boldly divest from activities and companies that have a negative contribution.
According to Bess Joffe, Head of Responsible Investments at Church Commissioners for England, culture, and impact integration are two key aspects to ensure the transition to net-zero. In addition, the net-zero target must be embedded in the bottom of the company to take hold, with a value-driven approach and a stakeholder-driven focus. Johanna Koeb, Head of Responsible Investments at Zurich Insurance Group, highlighted that robust data and transparency are needed to develop more climate solutions.
On her closing statement, Claudi Bolli, Head of Responsible Investing at Swiss Re, recommended that action, robust measurement, and transparency in reporting are essential to ensure the net-zero transition.
