Eva Grambye, Deputy Executive Director at The Danish Institute of Human Rights, shares a message about the urgency to embed a human rights lens on investments’ life cycle, closing the gap between the SDGs and human rights, emphasizing the force finance plays in scaling up human rights investments. She shares that 40 million people are trapped in modern slavery and the number of human rights violations has increased globally, reaching a peak in 2020.
The unprecedented momentum we are living in triggers a sense of urgency to reflect human rights and social sustainability in non-financial reporting directives and regulations, such as the SFDR, and extending the EU taxonomy to consider social objectives. Also, to develop social washing avoidance tools, by adding a human rights lens to investments beyond identifying and excluding negative aspects and engaging human risks across the life cycle of investments. There is a lack of clarity of what constitutes a social risk or social investment. To close the gap between impact investment and human rights, looking at the “what” and “how” social impacts are being produced is needed, besides promoting common methodologies to measure social impacts. “We need more mature methodologies on the S of ESG”, Eva claims. Investors have the responsibility to scale up investments with a human rights lens and redirect existing capital into a more human sustainable direction, respecting human rights into impact investment portfolios.
Eva closes her speech calling investors to commit to human rights, by changing their mindset and become equally worried about avoiding social risks instead of focusing only on financial risks, drawing attention to the UN Guiding Principles for Responsible Business.
